You know how we can never miss a first-class interior design, so we are already poking around trying to get to know all the key measurements for designing a perfect room. An organized and well-considered space can improve our mood so planning rooms starts with learning standard sizes and perfect measurements. Once we determine the dimensions of a room, we can make prudent decisions about room furniture like dressers, chests, benches, chairs, nightstands and so on.
The flawless room isn’t just a pretty space with eccentric trinkets; it’s a well-thought out design that fits in our living spaces, work surfaces, equipment, and storage with comfortable clearances. It’s a space that is not just comfortable, but also inspires efficiency and creativity. These key measurements will guarantee our room layouts just right.
Furniture
For now, let’s make a quick look on both lighting designs and perfectly tailored furniture pieces to introduce the wow factor in any ambiance. Furniture is an industrial or craft-based design to support human activities and helps establish a pleasing sense of order engaging two and three-dimensional design to the arrangement. The principles of design are applied to furniture, too.
For instance, pieces are arranged by size, scale, and proportion; rhythm is employed by repeating furniture, unity by harmonizing furniture with other spatial features like fireplace, or emphasis by using a furniture grouping as focal point. Balance becomes the primary consideration in arranging furniture because it affects the sense of equilibrium in a space. In furniture selection, the users and activities are considered first. The primary focus should be on the purpose of the furniture, the need for adjustability, flexibility, finish requirements, durability, and size. Emotional, social, or cultural values should be accommodated, too.
Moodboard
One thing that shouldn’t be missed out is picking up the articles that complement our design concept. Those make a vital part of the concept (mood) board where the room design is visually presented to the client.
Mood boards are a collection of assets and patterns that eventually evolve into a style guide. They exist as a tactile and visual sandbox, a place where we can openly experiment with the different facets of a design.
Functionality
The growth of information technology and communication channels has allowed for a swift shift in the way we reside and work. But in order to stay productive and on task, it’s imperative to have the perfect home, retail or office space. Evidently the most important part of our office is our workspace, a.k.a., our desk. Either we require a floating desk, a built-in desk, or a desk against a wall, each one will have different space rations, but the standard desk height is the same. We will want the desk with the largest surface area that will fit comfortably in our space. While built-in shelving can make our space feel more intimate, it also reduces floor space. If we have a smaller space, or need more flexibility, it’s better to stick with freestanding bookshelves. If we use the office space for reading or studying as well, we’ll want enough room for a sofa chair of some sort. We should always plan ahead for sufficient space in our home or workplace.
Seating Arrangements
An ideal size for any room is often dictated by how we want to plan the sitting locations. Typically, homeowners want three sofas in a ‘courtyard’ arrangement facing the fireplace. It will also depend whether we want the furniture to be within the room or up against the wall.
It’s better to come up with room designs that flow around the furniture for circulation and also have clear paths to the seating areas and exit points. Another important consideration is the conversation arc. Place furniture so that people can easily hear one another when seated; larger rooms may need to be broken into seating groups. When space and budget allow, several sofas can be arranged around oversize cocktail tables.
Decor
One or two of floor lamps will illuminate a room evenly. They also come in a great variety of sizes, and we need to find one that coordinates with the finishes of our room and that complements the scale of our design. Floor lamps take up relatively little floor space. Before committing to all of the furnishings that we wish to place in our living room, think about artwork. Large paintings need generous wall space and ideally should be displayed farther from the entry points so that they can be seen by someone entering a room. A good tip is to hang them low enough so that the top is just above eye level, with the midpoint at around 57 to 60 in. off the floor.
Sculptures as well need their own space and should be placed so that they can be viewed enjoyably. Allow floor space in proportion to the size of the sculpture.
